In accordance with our bylaws, we will have an Annual Meeting and elections to the Governing Committee in March. We'll need candidates for each of the twelve positions, an Election Committee, and an election process. For your convenience, here are the twelve categories of recreation that NJTLC currently recognizes:
1. 4WD motoring 2. Canoeing and Kayaking 3. Cross-country skiing 4. Dirt Bike Riding 5. Fine Arts (e.g., Photography, Painting) 6. Geocaching 7. Hiking, Backpacking, and Camping 8. Historical 9. Horseback Riding 10. Hunting, Fishing, & Trapping 11. Mountain Biking 12. Natural History Activities (e.g., birding, botany studies, etc.).
If you want to be a candidate, or if you want to nominate someone, please make that announcement on this thread. Maureen and Tom N. and I will keep track of who is running for which position, and we will summarize the situation for you as things evolve. Sound like a good plan?
And, I'll kick it off by announcing that I will run for the #12 position.

Who is Joe MacNamee? Is that the guy from Iron in the Pines? If it is I would like to be able to communicate with him prior to the meeting.

Please change dirt bike to dualsport! Dirt bikes are illegal on public land.

Changing something in the bylaws requires that someone give sufficient notice of the change they propose, and move, in a meeting, to have the change accepted by the governing committee. Then the governing committee would need to vote to accept the change, with a 2/3 majority.
We can do that easily enough, as long as we do it within the time frame imposed on us by our bylaws. But for the purposes of the upcoming elections, we have to live with the language that stands right now in our bylaws.
I think the essential point is that when we say "dirt bike riding" we all know that we mean "legal and responsible forms of recreation on motorcycles.

Please do NOT change 'dirt bike' to 'dualsport'.... as Russ has mentioned, no member has voted on that. We will reach an acceptable solution for the title at the next meeting.
As of now, I plan on running for the 'dirt bike' position. If I speak to others and someone has a REALLY strong stance on why they should be in that position - I will notify NJTLC?
See you next month...

See you next month... Thanks, Greg. Just for everybody's convenience, here is the article: ARTICLE XIII. AMENDMENTS A. These By-Laws may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote at a Regular Meeting. Any proposed amendment must be presented to the membership, in writing, at the Regular Meeting preceding the meeting in which the vote is to be taken. B. Proposed By-Law changes must also be readily available to the members in digital form one month prior to the meeting during which they are to be voted on. Good to hear that we have a candidate for the dirt bike/enduro/dualsport/motorcycle position! Of course, it's fine to have more than one candidate. Any member who wishes to can run for any position. Ideally, each position will be filled by someone who is passionate about that type of recreation, but also committed to the goals of NJTLC.

Are we going to have Elections for the officers in March as well. (like my passive leading questions?) Tom, I'm thinking I remember we decided that the governing body will decide amongst themselves who will hold what office.

Hi, In checking, the Governance Committee whole is elected this March and those roles become effective one month following. Then April would be the proper decision time for the GC body to officially vote on the officers.
via the bylaws, still an official vote.
"The Governing Committee shall select from among its own members, by simple majority vote, a Chair, Vice Chair, Recording Secretary, Membership Secretary, and any other distinct positions of duty that are deemed necessary."
Can we keep that under the Elections Committee eye to keep it on the agenda?
Thanks much

My name is Lissa Arsenault and would like to volunteer and apply for a position to better help protect recreational opportunities within the state forest system. The only hard part is that I enjoy and do almost every item listed! The two I participate in the most would be "mountainbiking" and "dirtbiking." Since Greg has already applied for the "dirtbiking" position (and he is an excellent represenative for the community), I would like to apply for the "mountainbiking" position (I spend several days a week in Brendan, Batsto and Wharton mountainbiking on designated trails). Attending the meetings would not be an issue since I live but only 10-15 minutes from the meeting location. I plan on attending the next meeting.

Welcome, Lissa! That's great that you are available to be on the Governing Committee. We do need to clarify, though, that membership on this online forum is separate from membership in the organization. Did you apply for membership with NJTLC? I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people are confused on that point!
