I stopped by Batsto today and picked up the Group Volunteer Registration Form and some log sheets. I inputted the cleanup at Apple Pie Hill and the hours Dave and Tom reported. Anyone who does volunteer work in a state park on behalf of the group, I need date, hours worked and the names of the people involved. You can either post them here or email them to me at njtraillovers@gmail.com. Thanks all!!!! BTW, we logged a total of 53 hours forNovember....

I was only logging the state parks. I can easily start a sheet for Bass River or any of the other state parks. Not sure how Russ wants to handle the WMAs and other areas....

Let's talk about it at the meeting. We have a variety of types of open spaces with trails--everything from federal to private land. I'm sure we want to log our hours, for our own purposes, regardless of type, but the reporting will vary with the owner.

Add a few more hours Sat Dec 11 on the 3 mile section of the Batona east of Batsto Village. Sunday unfortunately was a rainout. I went out saturday afternoon close to the Batsto paved road, but when hunters came in for the dusk session I moved out. Didn't expect anyone to be in that close an area, but was happy to back off. Trying to get a few things done before the snow cover. The trail in that area has narrowed to almost one foot width wide in some spots, and after clearing it was more visible that its really as wide as a fire cut. So I'll try to keep clearing to that extent. Just looks a little drastic at first view, but it could be years before a section gets attention again. Being opened up, the foot traffic may be more dispersed, helping to keep the brush from creeping back.

5 more hours on the Batona Trail brush cleanup of the 3 mile section going east out of Batsto on Sunday.
I realized that it will take me a year to cycle through that section, but thats ok. I'll get to see how fast it grows back in the spring.
In that area, the foot path gets so narrow its barely one foot fall wide in places with brush and stickers touching you the entire time. So I clear it back at least a foot on either side opening it up to more casual walking and hoping that more people will use that section thus keeping the brush down. So, I'll also initiate more hikes there via the OCSJ site and run one or two a year as well.
