There certainly is still that negative attitude towards wheelers.
Just recently i had my cousin ride along while I showed my brother in law, and his new Tacoma, some of the trails in the pines. My cousin was excited since he gave his jeep up a few years ago due to a new baby and hasn't been out since. He told a co-worker what is plans where for the weekend. Apparently his co-worker got very upset and went on a 45 min rant about how bad we both are for going out, cursing up a storm about it.
Despite how much the four wheeling community might do to create good press for themselves, or how much work this group might do to try and change peoples perspectives, people love to place blame. And whether people are upset about something that the wheeling community is responsible for or something that has very little to do with them, there is no bigger target for them to blame and hate as much as the guy leaving the woods in the dirty 4x4.

also to Jag's point, the view of "wheeling" is highly frowned upon by alot of people. I have been in the pines for 25++ years, I dirve a mildly modified vehicle and can go where I need to go out there with little trouble. Shockingly it does get muddy. The other day I was out with my wife near high crossing, we found and older couple buried to the doors in one of the holes. The SPP was there waiting with them for a towtruck. I attempted to pull them out but their truck was too heavy for my truck. I left and headed out and told them if I saw the truck I would send it down. I passed another SPP truck, I waved as I went by, which I have done many times before and since, now my truck was dirty from attempting the unstuck and my daily travels, well the SPP whipped around and stopped me, long story short I got a seatbelt warning and questioned about the mud, albeit I took my belt off moments before to hook a strap to the suburban that was in the same mud that was all over my truck now, but why bother explaining. Now if we went back a year or two this would have been a different meeting IMO, would most likely have been a passing wave without question. So I guess this is further proof no good deed goes unpunished. This is why I go on other sites and look for false accusations against people who take their trucks in the pines, if the accusations are valid and proven I say they deserve what they get, but a casual drive down any of those roads through most of the puddles without tearing the $hit out of them does not make one guilty until proven innocent.

While I do understand that many "Off Highway Vehicle" drivers view the term of "wheeling" as a negative. I don't, it is a term that I use with my friends and with the people, that yes I wheel with. I don't see an issue with it. I would say that I am a "wheeler", doesnt mean that my view is bad. I wheel in a few different areas, areas which are legal and more technical, including making the long trip to the closest offroad park. When I go out to Wharton I view it as a trail ride, I enjoy the people that I am with, enjoy camping, and enjoy the beauty of the area. No one that I wheel with breaks the laws of the park, if someone did we would stop wheeling with them. That is something we wont stand for.
Sorry if I got off on a side story/rant (as you can tell something I do often) but I have had several people say that I should stop using the term "wheeling" because it is a bad word. Its a word! That's it. I don't think it is something that people need to stop saying simply because some people give it a bad rap.

If you figure out how to shut down YOUTUBE then most of the problems would go away. Too much exposure by people who don't respect the forest the same way you guys do. Pictures and video's are worth a thousand words to the general public. The education thing is always a good idea, but most people cannot be taught. There will always be a**holes that will not listen that will ruin it for others.

Joe, It seems so hard anymore for decent folks who ride the pines to enjoy a day of riding without the stigma that they are irresponsible wheelers. Unfortunately for all of us who call the pines home, there still appears to remain a handful of irresponsible folk out there. That being said, I read one post out of 37 in the NJPB thread mentioning ATV use, and another looking for assistance from nursery owner "friends" on that site who may have helpful leads. Your frustration is justified and recognized....just as it should be on NJPB.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience out there.

I seem to be too late to the party here, I'm guessing that it was the other Tom you were asking to edit the thread.
We are trying to set up an informal meeting with the SPP to discuss the "who, what, why and where" of the NJTLC and let them know about our goals. We're not expecting too much more than just getting a dialog going. They will probably always be concerned about mud and major vehicle mods but maybe we can get to the point where an NJTLC sticker will turn a "stop and talk" back into a wave... I know that may be a tall order but we can certainly at least try.
