Hello All...
Seems I was asked to take point on this project along with Brad, Out of courtesy I would like the Project Committee to weight in also, since that is the function.
My thinking is a small but beneficial step, some basic hard work with some shovels and rakes, knocking down some berms and regrading the roads/trails without any disturbance of any areas where vegetation is present. Now if we can get permission and "heavier" equipment can be used, it would be easier.
Naturally permission will be need at the State Forest Level, I think a letter to both the Superintendent and Regional Manager of our intentions would be the start. If they require or request more detailed info, a walk down with them or a basic aerial photo with the road/trails to be cleaned up might do the trick.

I think it would be good to get in there when it dries out and all the different amphibians do their thing. With some shovels and rakes we could smooth out the ruts and cleanup the fire pit! It would be good to get an expert to go back and check it out to give us an idea on the best way to help the area without creating more damage! And I don't mean a BA degree in Religion-Studies!

The state forest has a naturalist named Gil. I did a nature hike with him once. I would consider him the expert.

I think this is a great idea. During the summer months the 1/4 mile is very dry and easy to see the areas that need attention. A specialist's opinion would help tremendously also.

I have never been to the 1/4 mile so I really don't know the actual condition of it, I was wondering if anyone had any recent pictures of it and the trail/roads there, mostly the roads and trails leading right out of the area not so much at the boundary of the "closed area". Even better would be photos of the specific trails and there location marked with GPS if possible and also marked on either an aerial or topo map showing the photo number and the direction taken.
With some assistance and a guide I could do this, I have a camera, a gps and topos and a way to print them and aerial photos and place the info on such. I think it would be good to use as part of the "submittal of intent" to do the work.
And retake the photos after the work is completed to show the results of the hard work.
Additionally, I suggest we request the use of other means of earth moving as a supplement to the submission, may be we will get lucky and get granted permission to use a small bobcat as long as it does not leave the sand road.

I presented this to Rob A. as a possible project, but I've recieved no response. When did you ask him?? More importantly, was it just in conversation or did you formally in writing make a proposal to do this???

We should have a quick meeting with you, me, Brad and Muck. Work is slamming me right now, so it may be tough for the next week or so... First order of business will be to assess if vehicles are still going back there and that will kind of dictate our next steps.

One question, to those that say no( or the one guy that says no to actually fixing the problem), do you only pick up litter in the woods if you think nobody else will dump their trash in that location ?

I would be happy to lend a helping hand once the above issues/concerns are addressed. I'm also certain I can get some friends to pitch in with some manual labor.

Welcome aboard, Oswego. Make no mistake, folks, work will continue. I'm just looking to ensure we get the most benefit from our labors.
I was on Tuckerton Rd. this past weekend and there were some fresh tracks heading in, but there was also some ribbon across the road...
