This is a lesser known or utilized activity. There are lots of backpacking possibilities for this in NJ. The pines is famous for its Batona Trail, but one could backpack via any route they choose. Sometimes its tricky because there may be long 16 mile plus distances between legal campsites on the Batona. Although with a little planning and car shuttling this can be worked. But any route though the unending maze of trails is possible in the pines. And up north again by the Delaware water gap and further north are 66 miles of the appalication trail in New Jersey. The OCSJ has occassional backpacking trips and they like to encourage new members and leaders to intiate and even lead trips. ocsj.org/campbackpacking/cbschedules.htmlI like all the new ultra light modes of backpacking nowadays. Although bringing a comfortable sleeping pad would be the most important thing. OCSJ has another big weekend picnic and campout over the October 1st weekend at Belleplain. You should book a campsite near site 120 and join in. They supply food and beverages at the Saturday picnic pavilion.
