How far is it again on foot from Carrannza Memorial to visit the scar and back. Best route?
Any other areas we may want the general public to see and learn about, in reasonable walking distances 4-7 miles from a parking area? (or more)
Any sensitive areas in hiking distance from batsto or atsion?
Thinking outloud on hikes I may run in for the fall for the OCSJ. Planning time for fall trips is coming up. We could have a tailgate thing at the end and give out info too.

Excellent idea. Keep us posted on dates. I've been wanting to get back there and see how much activity 1/4 mile is seeing during its first wet season reposted... but every time I'm out that way I have too many valuables to leave the truck parked for any length of time.
I'm not sure what kind of hiking trips OCSJ usually takes on, but I think you could make a nice trip by looping South on the Batona, coming up through 1/4 mile, and then wandering back on firecuts. I'm thinking it should be far less than 10 miles round trip. I could possibly GPS a route for you once you get an idea of what you're looking to do? If you were looking to something with less bush-wacking a sand road route shouldn't add that much mileage.
I know Carranza to 'Park' Road along the tracks to High Crossing Road to Hay Road is only about 4 miles one way by truck.
A walk around Batsto lake could be a good educational opportunity as well.... lots to see hiking around there, a familiar landmark, and easy to get to.

Ok I'll start working these up for the fall to late fall trip listings for the OCSJ website and Brochure distribution. A joint trip w/NJTLC/OCSJ type thing.
To have proper distribution and advanced advertising to over 1000 members, we work up trips 3-6 months in advance, so this will be good in the fall after the bugs have slowed down.
During the mid-time we can have club web-only listings of trips. We can even have the exploratory trip as a joint club trip.

It would be nice if sometime if someone with a 4-wheeler and I could meet after work, say 6pm at Carranza, and go for the run measuring the mileage on the gps. Walking the restricted parts as well. If we go on a monday or wednesday, I'll buy the wings after.
(Maybe you can even help me test the limits of my all-wheel van in the softstuff. I found out its way high with the roof racks and pulls trees down. And its way too long over the short bumps. But I don't really know how well those front wheels will grab when they have to.)
